Tips on How to go a Month Plastic Free
Plastic Free July offers several different aspects of plastic free challenges you can select, so you can pick the one that works for you whether that be a day, week, or the whole month! You can refuse ALL single use plastic OR pick a specific item to focus on such as the big four: plastic bottles, plastic bags, straws, and coffee cups & lids.Whatever path you choose to focus on, write it down, or better yet if you haven't already, select and register your challenge. Making it specific will help you to follow though.
Now that you have your goals on what you want to refuse for Plastic Free July, now is the time to come up with a plan! As the saying goes “Those who fail to plan , plan to fail.” Visit the Plastic Free July website for next steps and recommendations! We also have a 30 Days to Zero-Waste collection on the ZippNada Facebook Page.
Please, please, PLEASE do NOT throw out perfectly good and usable products for this challenge, it completely defeats the point! You are now out of deodorant or toothpaste? Great! Once you run out THEN substitute it for a plastic free product (or make your own). Use what you have or invest in some essentials that will make your transition smoother, at ZippNada we offer high quality, affordable zero-waste gear that you will love! However, you do NOT need to spend a ton of money on products to participate. Checkout our YouTube video for more information.
A month seems too intimidating? No worries, you can try a plastic free day!
My Personal Plastic Free July Goals
I HATE cooking with a fiery passion of a thousand burning suns, but I hate all of the plastic packaging that comes with not cooking, whether that be take -out, or frozen meals. So this Month my goal is to make healthy meals using package free produce and bulk foods to avoid plastic packaging (I allow myself to buy things in glass containers). I am also including this under cooking at home: I am going to try and reduce my food waste. Meaning I am going to make recipes that use up all of the food I have as to reduce what scraps I have to dispose of either in the trash or compost.
I share a house with a roommate (my brother) who does not practice zero-waste, so we do have one trash can and we have “bin liners” I keep my garbage separate and reuse dog food bags a liners when I have them (still not great but at least it gets one more use) but I am going to try and go liner free for this month because it is something that we struggle with.
I am so lucky that my work (and passion) is to spread the zero-waste movement. This month my goal is to take it up a notch and find creative ways to get my local community to participate!
